The ever-elusive Banksy leaves his mark on otherwise ordinary streetscapes around the world. The Brit puts up his distinctive stencil-style epigrams for free, which, given the his acclaim, begs the question – how much are one of those bad boys worth? Well, Banksy’s work reportedly changes hands for a pretty penny, millions, that is. The debate over the monetary value (or lack thereof) of “art” is an old one, and perhaps takes on a new dynamic when the subject is streetart.

“Going up against the Art Establishment, Critics, Auction Houses,Gallery Owners and Authentication Boards in a quest for the elusive meal ticket, two filmmakers unwittingly gatecrash the murky and protective world of Banksy.”

The resulting, unscripted footage, is met with some funky computer animation courtesy of artist Jo Ratcliffe (in collaboration with Bouwine Pool for Sherbet). In the end, van Lamsweerde and Matadin succeed in creating a short piece that straddles the line between reality and surrealism, as is often their intention.

“We’ve had the idea for this video for some time. We are fascinated with the different realities going on in one shoot and so the music, the animation, Kate’s movements and the camera angle represent these layers of perception,” says Van Lamsweerde.
